Restaurant Review: Dahon at Mesa (Tagaytay City, Cavite)

Dahon at Mesa

It was my son-in-law Bryan's birthday and we decided to go on a joyride to Tagaytay City for a very early dinner.  A recommendation brought us to Dahon at Mesa.

Located across SMDC Wind Tower 5, this cozy 2-storey restaurant, serving Filipino cuisine, offers both indoor and outdoor dining.  Parking space is located at the front (good for eight to ten cars, double parking) and at the back (good for six to seven cars).  The latter was reached via a steep ramp.

TaalVolcano and Taal Lake are best viewed from the outdoor dining area, beside the parking area, and at the second floor balcony. We opted for the former.  The volcano just erupted one and a half years ago (January 20, 2020) and Volcano Island was almost devoid of any vegetation.  Still, after a long lockdown due to COVID 19, it was good to be out for some fresh air and good food.

Check out “Taal Volcano:After the 2020 Eruption

Being a group of eight, we ordered the boodle fight feast good for 5 persons (PhP2,650) a restaurant bestseller which came with cups of steamed rice, fried tawilis (freshwater sardine), crispy fried tilapia, lechon, roasted chicken, garlic buttered shrimp, grilled pusit (squid), lumpiang shanghai, fried talong (eggplant), ensaladang itlog na pula (salted egg salad) and dessert for the day which, during our visit, was watermelon.

Special Bulalo
Pancit Canton
We also ordered Pansit Canton and Special Bulalo (PhP580), another bestseller, and washed it all town with a pitcher of iced tea.

The beef in the bulalo was really soft and tender.  We were too full to order dessert and there was food left over for takeout.  The food was good and the portions were big for the price paid. The staff were also friendly and accommodating. Highly recommendable.

Boodle fight feasts can also be ordered good for 10 persons (PhP5,250, Grilled Tuna Panga added) and 2 persons (PhP1,200, Garlic Buttered Shrimps and Ensaladang Itlog na Pula not included).  For merienda, there’s Lumpiang Shanghai and Mixed Pancit Guisado, both at PhP285; Fresh Lumpia (PhP240) and Suman at Tsokolate (PhP210)

For soup (aside from the Special Bulalo we ordered), they also serve Kansi Bulalo and Sinigang na Hipon, all priced at PhP580; and the Chicken Tinola and Sinigang na Boneless Bangus, both at PhP480. For dessert, there’s Halo-Halo, Butter Cake and Special Suman.

Bangon Cebu : The I Love Cebu Travel Fair

The long and narrow island of Cebu, one of the more sought-after destinations in the Philippines, is a marvelous place of refuge and rest as well as an exquisite place to experience many thrills. Here, mountains and seas converge, and tranquil coastal areas and a booming metropolis coexist in harmony. Cebu is well known for its white sandy beaches, diving sites, friendly locals, and of course, it’s amazing food.

Cebu City, hailed as the Queen City of the South” and perhaps the oldest city in the Philippines, has proved itself to be aging gracefully. It is home to a number of historical sites (Fort San Pedro, Magellan’s Cross, etc.) and ancestral houses (Yap San Diego Ancestral House, Casa Gorordo Museum, etc.).

Across, on Mactan Island, is Lapu-Lapu City, the breezy and laid back side of Metro Cebu and home to the beautifully-structured Mactan International Airport, the second busiest airport in the country (direct flights to Cebu are available in some countries) and a gateway to the island, plus a strip of resorts, ranging from mid to highly acclaimed ones, but all offering their very own savoir-faire.

The historical birth of Christianity is sprawled all over the province as seen in the beautiful Spanish-era churches that can be found in Argao, Bantayan, Boljo-on (a National Cultural Treasure), Carcar City, Cebu City, Dalaguete, Ginatilan, Minglanilla, Naga, Oslob, San Fernando, Sibonga and Talisay.

A little over an hour’s drive down south is the wonderful town of Oslob where you can get the exhilarating thrill of flying by paragliding or swim with gentle but majestic giants called whale sharks, both definitely an experience of a lifetime. Up north are the beautiful white sand beaches of Camotes Island, Malapascua Island, and Bantayan Island, and many more. The awe-inspiring diving spots of Malapascua, Moalboal and Mactan Island are also the pride of Cebu.

If it is heights that excite you, numerous mountains can be trekked within Cebu, perfect for beginners and even for more experienced trekkers. The 1,013 meter high Osmena Peak in Dalaguete, Cebu’s highest peak, is only a 3-hour drive from the city. You can also go canyoneering in Kawasan Falls.

The Balik sa Bohol Online Sale Media Launch

Balik sa Bohol Online Sale

In an effort to jumpstart the economy of Bohol via the re-start of the tourism industry (one of the leading economic drivers of the province), the province was opened to leisure tourists on December 15, 2020.  In this regard, the ‘Balik sa Bohol’ program, to be held from February 21 to March 14, 2021, was initiated to jumpstart tourist arrivals and, consequently, help tourism workers get back on their feet.

This tourism program, which aims to boost interest among free and independent travelers (FIT) to visit Bohol, features an online sale on tourism accommodation and packages up to 70%. The ‘Balik sa Bohol’ program was launched by inviting the media in a virtual meeting held on February 10, 2021, Wednesday, 2 PM.

The Media Launch started with welcome remarks by Ms. Margie Munsayac (VP-Sales and Marketing of Bluewater Resorts) and messages from Ms. Anthonette C. Velasco-Allones (COO - Tourism Promotions Board), Mr. Shalimar Hofer Tamano (DOT Region VII Director), Mayor Leonila Montero (Panglao mayor) and Gov. Arthur Yap (Bohol governor).

A Balik sa Bohol Online Sales video, Cebu Pacific Air video and TBP's Safe Trip Pinas video was also presented.

The keynote speaker was Ms. Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, Secretary of the Department of Tourism.  This was followed by a question and answer segment and a raffle, for media participants, of two 3-day/2-night stays for two at select Bohol resort and a grand raffle of another 3-day/2-night stay for two with airfare and PCR tests included. Atty. Lucas "Doy" Nunag (Chairman of the Provincial Tourism Council) delivered the closing remarks.

Balik sa Bohol Media Launch

The province has already loosened the arrival protocols for FIT wishing to enter Bohol. FITs may enter Bohol and stay within the travel bubble if they are able to secure a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test taken 72 hours prior to arrival here in the province.

Participating companies

Participating companies include Chocolate Hills Adventure Park, The Acacia Glamping Park plus a number of resorts and travel agencies. For reservations and bookings visit: http://www.traveloco.ph/balikbohol.

Restaurant Review: Katherine's Cafe (Ayala Center, Makati City, Metro Manila)

Katherine's Cafe

Another favorite watering hole of ours in Glorietta is Katherines Café, located at the Landmark end of Glorietta 3. Opened in 2019, it is the second outlet to be opened (the first was in Ayala Malls, Vertis North in Quezon City) and it was still open for dine-in during this pandemic times.

Pre-pandemic, it used to have a larger area, with a function room at the end, but this was closed off due to quarantine guidelines.

The terrace-like dining area

Still the remaining part of the restaurant’s cheery interior was still brightly decorated, really homey and comfortable with wooden furniture and flooring, floral designs and patterns on couches and benches, plus a number of aesthetic paintings and lighting fixtures.

Just outside the café is an inviting terrace that gives you a feel of al fresco dining (though still inside the mall) where you can watch shoppers walking by. The café was said to have been named after Katherine, an imaginary little eight-year-old girl who’s delighted by the dishes her grandmother or nana prepares at home.

The main dining area

As for the food, we’re happy to see that Katherine’s Cafe  still served up some of our old, good tasting favorite comfort food, both Italian (pasta, flat bread pizza) and Filipino. Do not expect fine dining as it’s as good as a cafe gets. The food portions are just right and the staff is friendly and professional.

We started our meal with the Classic Caesar Salad with romaine, bacon, croutons, caesar dressing, and parmesan shavings.  Add on includes Grilled Chicken (Php80) and Grilled Prawns (Php125).

Among all the longganisa flavors in the country, I particularly like the Vigan longganisa and the  crispy Vigan Longganisa I ordered was served with fried egg, garlic fried rice, tomato salsa and pickled vegetables.

At the end of the main dining area is the closed off portion of the restaurant

Jandy’s favorite is still the delicious, beautifully golden brown, succulent and crunchy Cereal Fried Chicken (Php368), a cereal-crusted buttermilk fried chicken (either classic or spicy) served with rice or French fries, and a pleasantly sweet and tangy milk gravy.

When eating at Katherine’s Café, it’s imperative to leave room for dessert so I tried out a slice (Php175) of their Old Fashioned Sansrival.

A favorite dessert of mine, it is composed of baked meringue, toasted cashew nuts and vanilla butter cream.  A whole cake costs Php1,250. The all-day, 40-page dining menu, one of the most comprehensive of any restaurant in the city, covers practically everything - from delicious Filipino breakfasts, amply portioned entrees, a collection of delectable family recipes and yummy desserts, cakes and pastries.  Other items on the menu include:
