It's More Fun in the Philippines 

The Travel Tour Expo (TTE), touted as the biggest annual travel and tourism event in the country, was held last February 9-11 at the SMX Convention Center.  This one-stop-shop for the travel needs of tourists and jet setters was held by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTTA).  The expo will also showcase forums highlighting topics on travel and tourism. Their exhibitors list of 995 booths is composed of every travel-related entity one can think of.

They include airline companies; travel agencies and tour operators; hotels and resorts; theme parks; local government units; cruise liners; insurance companies; tourist organizations; regional tourism offices; national tourism organizations from overseas; embassies; government agencies; food concessionaires; merchandisers and other travel related entities.

Since 1993, the PTTA has been bringing together stakeholders under one roof.  During the period 2011-2017, the number of exhibitors has grown by 30%. Now on its silver anniversary, there was a 21% jump in the number of exhibitors this year compared with 2017. The TTE will occupy the entire SMX Convention Center (Halls 1-4, Function Rooms 1-5, Meeting Rooms 2-10) and cover more than 16,000 sq. m. of floor space.

The PTTA prepared cultural presentations as well as fashion shows featuring Filipino tapestry and the creations of designer Rene Salud.  This year’s TTE, supported by the Department of Tourism, Tourism Promotions Board, Philippine Airlines, Mabuhay Miles, and Citibank, was joined by 335 companies including 29 airlines, 6 ship/cruise liners, 125 hotels and resorts, 83 travel agencies/tour operators (the highest in the history of the expo) and 7 theme parks.

In addition, Travel Tour Expo will also coincide with the 3rd International Travel Trade Expo 2018, a business-to-business (B2B) component of the TTE which allows members from the PTAA to have pre-appointed one-on-one meetings with executives from international tourism companies and national tourism organizations. The iTTE, which will again be located at the second floor of SMX, is expected to draw at least 50 international sellers and 300 local buyers.

Among the countries and territories expected to participate in iTTE are Australia, Cambodia, China, Egypt, France, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United States, and Vietnam.

Throughout the three-day event, the travel expo certainly provided opportunities for the 140,000 visitors to scour the country or circle the globe but, before they could do that, they had to cover a lot of ground by foot first. People line up as early as 3 AM in the wee hours of the morning just to get hold of the cheapest but very limited (approximately 15 to 20 per offering)  travel packages.  Examples include the unbeatable price of PhP3,800/pax for a 3-day/2-night stay in Boracay including transfer and quad sharing accommodations; PhP15,000/pax for a 3-day/2-night stay in Hong Kong; and only PhP8,000/pax for a Taipei vacation. To ensure the legitimacy and value of the domestic tour packages, travel agencies and tourism boards that hold office in other regions will participate.

On February 9, the first day of the expo, Citibank credit cardholders were allowed to enter the convention halls from 8:30 to 9:30 AM (the rest entered from 9:30 am onwards). Travelers who will signed up for Mabuhay Miles, the frequent flyer program of Philippine Airlines (a major sponsor for the TTE), were given 500 bonus miles (almost the equivalent of the 700 Mabuhay Miles you’ll get for booking a one-way Economy Class flight to Hong Kong) just for signing up.
