Garden Inspirations |
Underneath the Enid A. Haupt Garden is the Ripley Center concourse where the “Garden Inspirations” exhibit was still ongoing. Opened last September 3, 2016, this temporary exhibit delves deeper into the world of miniature gardening by showcasing gardening styles for small spaces. Images from the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens (AAG) were used to inspire five miniature landscapes.

Miniature garden No. 1 inspired from images from the Archives of American Gardens |
Thousands of AAG images were
scrutinized by the Smithsonian Gardens’ (SG) team of education specialists and
collection curators to find ones that show garden features that could be replicated,
at a compact scale, with small plants and miniature furniture, with low-light
conditions in mind.
Miniature Garden No. 2 (Rossetti Garden, Fairfield, Connetcicut) |
Narrowing down options, the “the
perfect five” images ultimately selected met these requirements, animating
garden styles ranging from outdoor living rooms to community gardens. This
exhibit also features pieces from SG’s historic Garden Furnishings Collection.
Miniature Garden No. 3 |
These miniature landscapes, small-scale works of art designed to spur creativity, feature five planters that host unique interior and exterior vignettes that illustrate a variety of small gardening options that fit urban settings.
Miniature Garden No. 4 (Fifth Season, Barrington, Illinois) |
Requiring little space and are low-maintenance, they can be adapted to accentuate any size area, adding a big style to any garden. The exhibit ends on April 30, 2019.
